There is always a surge of Phil Taylor fans looking forward for the next edition of his player darts. He will be rocking his new Phil Taylor G8 Darts during the upcoming World Seniors Darts Championship in February of 2022. Phil will be going up against the likes of Paul Lim, John Lowe, John Part, Deta Hedman, Trina Gulliver (my all time favorite darts player) and many more legends.

Phil Taylor's Legacy

Phil Taylor and Target History - a Powerful Partnership

Since joining Team Target in 2014, Phil has worked closely with their specialist team of designers to create the perfect set-up for his unique throw and continuously honor the 16 x World Darts Champion’s incredible and unchallenged career.

We have seen multiple generations of his Player Darts come out that reflect several years of adjustments to find the ideal configuration for him and we’ve now landed on the Phil Taylor G8 Darts (Generation 8). His thirst for perfection surely did not end with his retirement.

Phil Taylor G8 Darts | Product Review

What's in the video?

Jen Mounts gives you an in-depth review of the Phil Taylor G8 Darts by Target (Power 9Five Generation 8 barrels). She covers several key features like overall manufacturing, design and grip intensity. Let’s break down each aspect and elaborate a little:

Manufacturing

Phil Taylor G8 Darts feature black PVD performance coating with silver highlights in the front.

Used by 16 X World Champion Phil Taylor

This year, Target went for more milling on Phil’s darts than the prior 2 years and included a very cool black PVD performance coating with silver highlights in the front. What you can’t quite see, is that the darts are sandblasted before they’re coated which gives them a unique matte black texture. This of course offers a different look and feel as well all throughout the entire dart.

Innovative Grip

Phil Taylor G8 Darts feature hand sandblasting before coating and matte black texture.

This is one of my favorite grips I’ve ever felt in the rear of a dart. It’s similar to a Stephen Bunting dart, but less harsh. I think this grip doesn’t exist on any other dart currently. Also something to note, the very back that carries a similar pattern to the rear is not actually a part of the barrel – it’s the shaft. Target did some milling at the bottom of the shaft not only for an added grip option, but also for visual aesthetics. Phil Taylor himself slightly grip into the shaft with his thumb, so the darts and shaft are designed to suit his grip style.

Swiss Point

Phil Taylor G8 Darts are fitted with Diamond Swiss Points

Just like the year prior, the Phil Taylor G8 Darts are fitted with a Diamond Pro Swiss Point, whilst the soft tip is dressed in a black pixel tip.

Phil Taylor has always been obsessed with innovation, and what is more innovative than Swiss Point which allows you to switch your point in seconds using the provided Swiss Point tool.

Weights & Options

The Phil Taylor G8 Darts come in a steel tip and soft tip version with multiple barrel weights for each version.

The Phil Taylor G8 Darts are the classic Power 9Five bomber shape and Target went for more milling this year. The steel tip and soft tip barrels are darn near identical except for the nose profile. Starting in the rear, you’ll notice very fine trapezoidal cuts that appear to be little squares. In the center, you see a sort of interrupted ring section with small axial cuts throughout (slightly more aggressive feeling than the back). Finally, the front consists of tightly spaced silver radial cuts and a smooth nose with long standard axial cuts.

OVERALL GRIP INTENSITY
2/5
Grip Intensity:
2/5

We rate the overall grip intensity of the Phil Taylor G8 Darts a 2 out of 5.

The reason Phil himself probably likes a smoother dart with less grip is because he has a super closed in grip with forefinger and thumb touching and a lot of skin is coming into contact with his barrel so grippier darts would probably get caught in his fingers during his release impact. In contrast people with a light touch or on their barrel or calloused hands might seek out aggressive grips so they don’t slip during release.

Whether you're a super fan or not, the Phil Taylor G8 Darts are an excellent choice for people with a tight grip that don't need a lot of space to spread out their hold and want to stay focused on the weight of their darts in their hand.
